Country singer, Tracy Lawrence, was filming a video onboard the train.

Martin Fischer, President of High Five Entertainment in Nashville, said, "There's a lot of musical variety in Christmas in the Black Hills, but I believe the audience will really enjoy our on-location segments - Thompson Square on a sleigh ride near Deadwood and Tracy Lawrence on the 1880 Train in Hill City."

"Experiencing the Black Hills and meeting the people who live and work here were the highlights for the production team; the history, locations, and hospitality make the area a great place to shoot," he continued.

Christmas in the Black Hills stars Big & Rich, Thompson Square, Tracy Lawrence, Andy Gibson, The Farm, and Bradley Gaskins. Check it out:

I am actually sending this entry for my mother, she is an amazing lady and I am planning a trip into the Black Hills for her during this exciting month of May!

May is a special month every year since it holds Mother's Day and her Birthday! However, this year is extra special because she is also graduating from college!
Deb, has two children, both girls ages 28 (me!) and 19, and is the grandmother of a 2 year old! I recently moved back home last year to work on my Master's degree, and she graciously openned her home for us, and has endured the stress and love of housing a infant/toddler and daughter while trying to work 2 jobs and attend school full time!

I am in the process of scheduling a trip up into Keystone for that weekend, since her birthday is the 5th, she graduates the 7th and then of course mothers day follows! So I just ran across your website while looking for fun things to do during our visit and am excited to include you in our itinerary!

Congratulations Shanna & Deb, hope you enjoy your train tickets and have a very happy Mother's Day!

Hilyo Restoration Photos

A few weeks ago, while digging through some old photos from the '90s, I ran across pictures taken of the Drovers car, Hilyo.

Anytime I look at old photos of the equipment before our staff began restoration work, it blows me away how much of a transformation it is.

Hilyo was restored in 1997, and added to the line up in 1998. Keystone was one of the communities that were badly hit, and several sections of the rail between Hill City and Keystone were torn up.

At the time, most of it was repaired, but only as far as Keystone Junction, which is about one mile from Keystone Station proper.

Our return to Keystone Station in 2001 meant several things for the 1880 Train. A new depot had been constructed along the main street in town, making it convenient for passengers to board the train. Also, 2001 was the first summer engine #110 was ready for operation. This engine was able to pull 7 cars. Engines #104 and #7 had previously only been able to pull 4.

This summer, 2011, marks our 10th year pulling the 1880 Train into Keystone. We look forward to another great year!

A view from what is now the boarding are in Keystone.

More than one train at your wedding!

Are you, or someone you know, looking for that one-of-a-kind wedding venue? Passengers were served four seasonal beers along with other Oktoberfest fare. Here's what some of our passengers had to say about this event!

"We’ve attended the Wine Train several times so we knew Oktoberfest would be fun. This past weekend was even better than expected. Thanks so much. We’re already planning on attending next year." - Kristi B.

"Gail and I were on the Oreville coach; we had a great time. The weather was beautiful, we saw wonderful scenery including lots of deer and wild turkeys, and enjoyed the tasty food.
The event seemed to be well planned, orderly, and reasonably priced. The ticket window ladies seemed to have everything organized, the line moved quickly, and they easily found our reservations. On the train, all of the 1880 Staff knew their jobs and kept order among the passengers. By this I mean no passengers were allowed to walk around from car to car and the “Beer Ladies’ controlled the beer distribution. One beer at the station before departing (some did get refills), one bottle on the way to Keystone, two bottles on the way back to Hill City. Food accompanied the beer; I think serving food on the train is a good idea. The 1880 Staff were almost like airline flight attendants – Well Done!
One consideration: one glass and 3 bottles of beer may be too much for some folks, causing waste. I did see some folks pour some beer out the coach windows in order to give an empty bottle to the trash collectors.
In comparison with your competitors, we’ve been on several other October BBQ trains and wine trains, including the Virginia & Truckee RR in Virginia City, NV. The V&T serves all the food at the station before boarding. The wine trains are the worst; there is a lot of wine available with passengers moving from car to car in search of more wine when the wine supply finally runs low. Some folks get loud and stupid when they drink too much. I think the 1880 Train’s approach of controlling passenger movement and eating on the train is a good idea.
Thank you again for the enjoyable evening and we are wishing you every success on the 2nd Annual Oktoberfest Train." - Stan and Gail

The Oktoberfest Express will return during our 2011 summer season. It's almost that time to start another great season of railroading here at the Black Hills Central. The shop crews have had a very productive winter, and look forward to seeing a busy summer. We were able to get quite a few big jobs completed this year, so it will be nice to see all are engines and equipment running this year. Listed below are some of the many tasks completed this winter. Enjoy, and will see you this season.

Joe Belczak (Conductor and Shop Crew, BHC Railroad)

Engine #104

This year, 104 had its cap inspection and some various repairs done to its boiler. A lot of the boiler work required the removal of the saddle tank and cab floor. The saddle tank was reinstalled yesterday, and the locomotive will see a new cab floor this next week. Engine #104 is ready to start the season this year on May 3rd thanks to the hard efforts of the engine crew.

Engine #110
Due to quite a bit of work done last year to 110's boiler side sheets, very little work was done to the actual boiler of the locomotive. Quite a few flue tubes were replaced this year due to water scale build-up. Engine #110's running gear has been thoroughly inspected, and all driver axles have been examined and repaired if needed.

Engine #7
Since Engine #7 sees less mileage than our other engines, less work needed to be accomplished this winter on the locomotive. Engine #7 had a successful hydro test, and awaits its next Doubleheader this season sometime in June.

Car Shop
All work has been completed on car#65, and with many successful winter runs we will see Edward Gillette begin the car roster this season. On your trip to see the 1880 train make double sure to check out this beautiful car inside and out! Various cars in the BHC roster received new wheels this winter as well, including much truck rebuild. Season begins this year with our enclosed car line-up.

Railroad Code

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 152px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/S7IxyV6LkaI/AAAAAAAAANU/82kkos4E9Z0/s200/IMG_1941.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454476839643484578" />

Nearly everyone is familiar with Morse code and rightly so as it's been a means of communication for over 160 years. Both engines are Baldwin Steam locomotives with a 2-6-2T wheel arrangement. As these are tank engines, they do not pull a tender. #104 was built in 1926 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and was first used at the Silver Falls Timber Company in Oregon and the Peninsula Terminal Railroads in Portland, Oregon.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/S4xInAgLo0I/AAAAAAAAAMY/MelaWis_sNw/s200/104+after+Restoration.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443805884571165506" />
#104 after restoration in the early 90's.

Like all of our steam locomotives, #104 burns used motor oil rather than coal. On May 14th, 2001, #104 pulled the first train back into Keystone since the flood of 1972 that destroyed the last mile of rail into Keystone. From this point on, #104 was used less frequently as it lacks the power to pull seven car trains like Engine #110. From time to time, #104 and #7 will 'double head' a seven car train while #110 is in the shop having a boiler wash.

Engine #104 has a fuel capacity of 750 gallons of recycled oil and can carry 1,600 gallons of water. The engine weighs 134,000 lbs.

And what about Engine #103? #103 is currently awaiting restoration, occasionally donating a part or two to #104.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/S4xGpuImv0I/AAAAAAAAAMA/oePRDBqkRh4/s200/103.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443803732156792642" />
Engine #103 awaiting restoration.

History of the High Line

In the late 1870's, Deadwood had become one of the largest gold boom settlements in the area. The High Line, which the 1880 Train's line spurs off of, was built in competition with the Freemont, Elkhorn, and Missouri Valley Railroad which was coming into Deadwood from Rapid City. Both railroads wanted to be the first to provide service to this boom town.

The High Line began in 1890 in the southern Hills as a branch off of the main line running from Alliance, Nebraska, into north-central Wyoming Territory. The area was referred to as Siding Seven and was later named Edgemont because of its location on the edge of the Black Hills.

On May 15th, 1890, crews started laying rail out of Deadwood Junction, which was located across the Cheyenne River from Edgemont. By August 24th of that same year, they had reached Minnekahta. The progress to Minnekahta had been delayed by construction of a 700' long, 126' high trestle across Sheep Canyon. This trestle was at one time the longest trestle in South Dakota.

The line reached Custer on the 6th of October, and they reached Hill City not long after, in early November. The High Line continued north through Mystic, Rochford, Nahant, Englewood, and finally reached Deadwood on January 24th, 1891. Unfortunately, it did not beat the Freemont, Elkhorn, and Missouri Valley Railroad, which made it to Deadwood a mere month earlier.

Many spurs were built off the High Line in the 1890's. One ran from Englewood to Spearfish by way of Spearfish Canyon, and another ran to Hot Springs. The Hill City to Keystone spur began by only going as far as Addie Camp, which was approximately three miles from Hill City. The spur reached Addie Camp in 1893. They continued to push east in 1899, and by January 25th, 1890, reached the mining town of Keystone.

Over the next 110 years, many changes would take place along both the High Line from Edgemont to Deadwood as well as the spur running from Hill City to Keystone.

The intention of the spur to Keystone was to assist with the multiple mining and milling operations in Keystone as well as along the spur. It operated in this capacity from the late 1800's until 1927. It was in this year that a mountain three miles from the station in Keystone was declared to be Gutzon Borglum's new canvas.

This mountain had several names, depending on the local you asked. Some called it Sugar Loaf Mountain, others called it Cougar Mountain. There was a Slaughter House gulch in the vicinity and therefore some even called it Slaughter House Mountain. Borglum ultimately re-named it Mt. Rushmore after a New York man who donated heavily toward his cause.

The carving of presidents on Mt. Rushmore dramatically changed Keystone, and therefore service along the High Line spur. Burlington had 'Escorted Tours', which carried passengers from Custer to Hill City along the High Line. From Hill City, there was no passenger train service, instead riders would board a bus and continue on to Mt. Rushmore for a close up view of Borglum's sculpture.

On the Keystone Spur, ore and lumber production continued to keep service going after World War II and steam was the motive power on these trains until the late 1940's. It was then that diesels began taking over the tri-weekly operations along the spur.

In the 50's, a new aspect of the operation was added. William Heckman and Robert Freer began plans for a tourist railroad, the 1880 Train. They believed "there should be in operation at least one working steam railroad, for boys of all ages who share America's fondness for the rapidly vanishing steam locomotive."

By 1956, fundraising and equipment acquisition was well under way. The equipment was narrow-gauge and the steam locomotives included a 2-6-0 from the Chicago Railroad fair and also a 2-8-0 Baldwin locomotive from the White Pass and Yukon Railroad. It was dubbed the Klondike Casey because of its service in the Northwest Territory.

Permission was also obtained to run on the Keystone spur along with Burlington's freight trains. In order to accommodate the narrow gauge equipment, a third rail was lay between the standard gauge rail. The narrow gauge line ran from Hill City up to the site of an old sawmill about four and a half miles up the spur. This site was later called Oblivion.

At Oblivion, a wye was put in place so the tourist train could turn around and return to Hill City. The Klondike Casey would be the first locomotive to operate.

The 2-6-0 from the Chicago Railroad Fair was re-named the Chief Crazy Horse, and was soon to become a display. The reasoning behind this was that the Chief Crazy Horse was a coal burning engine. A ban had been placed on coal burning engines in the Black Hills National Forest back in 1912.

The Black Hills Central's first run was on August 18th, 1957. Within the first year of operation, about 30,000 passengers road the '1880 Train', as Heckman referred to it.

In 1962, the train ride was extended into Keystone. This was due to the acquisition of a standard gauge locomotive. This engine was a Baldwin 2-6-2, engine number 7. Number 7 was given the nickname General Custer. For two years, a dual gauge operation was run with Klondike Casey running from Hill City to Oblivion and Number 7 from Oblivion to Keystone. Because of deterioration of the Klondike Casey, the line became a standard gauge operation in 1964.

Over the next few years, Burlington's service on the Keystone spur lessened to an 'as needed' operation. In 1972, the line was badly damaged in a severe flash-flood. The last mile of rail into Keystone was the most damaged. The newly merged Burlington Northern railroad created a siding for loading freight a mile outside of town instead. This siding became known as Keystone Junction.

For four years after the flood, the 1880 Train ran an alternate route of Hill City to Custer on the High Line. In 1977, the 1880 Train was back on the Keystone spur now running as far as the newly created Keystone Junction. These trains were pulled by either the Number 7, or the number 104, which had been acquired in the 1960's.

By the late 1970's, Burlington Northern's freight revenues had decreased dramatically along the Keystone spur and it was put on the abandonment list in 1980. In 1981, the 1880 Train was able to obtain financing to purchase the Keystone spur's tracks and also the depot and sidings in Hill City. Only a year later, the Custer to Deadwood section of the High Line was added to the abandonment list as well. It suspended operation on November 8, 1983 and the rail was scrapped. The Custer to Edgemont section followed in 1986.

This 100+ mile stretch of High Line track was converted into the Mickelson Trail, leaving the 1880 Train an isolated operation.

By the late 1980's, the expense of the railroad had become more than the Heckman's could maintain. In 1990, the Warder family bought the 1880 Train. In the early 1990's, they concentrated on restoring engine's number 104 and 7. This restoration increased their reliability and performance. Work was also done on some of the rolling stock, a trend that would continue over the next 19 years.

To assist with these equipment restorations, a second stall was added to the existing roundhouse. Similar treatment was given to the entire train yard. The depot underwent upgrades, allowing the 1889 depot to operate as the gift shop and ticket office. Two WWII era hospital cars served as the High Liner Snack Shoppe and were placed on their own stretch of rail parallel to the Hill City station sidings. The grounds have undergone landscaping and restroom facilities were updated.

While the Hill City end of the operations underwent a face lift, things on the Keystone, or Keystone Junction to be specific, end were much the same until the new millennium. A small ticket booth existed in Keystone next to the post office, and if a passenger purchased tickets there, they would continue up Old Hill City Road to Keystone Junction. Keystone Junction hardly had more frills than Keystone proper. An old set from Orphan Train bore the name of the station and restroom facilities were in the form of portable restrooms.

In the days of Keystone Junction, the 1880 Train operated a four car train as this was the maximum 104 or 7 could handle. Double Heading was pointless as the Keystone Junction siding could handle only 4 cars.

Throughout the 1990's, the Warders had several cars restored and began naming them after High Line sidings. Oreville, Redfern, Mystic, and Hilyo all underwent restoration and Addie Camp was maintained as an 'Antique' Car.

In 1999, the engine shop began restoration on Baldwin steam locomotive #110. This restoration would set the stage for perhaps the largest change to the 1880 Train since 1972. In 2001, the last mile of rail from Keystone Junction to Keystone was repaired. At the same time, engine number 110 had finished being restored. 110 could pull a seven car train, creating the need for more rolling stock. Through the next eight years, four more cars would be restored, raising the total number of rolling stock to nine passenger cars.

With the completion of the rail into Keystone, a new depot was also constructed. With the addition of Internet technology, more and more passengers could now begin their train ride from this depot. With the operation rapidly expanding, it wasn't long until 2007 rolled around and the 1880 Train was able to celebrate 50 years as a tourist railroad.

Many things have changed since Bill Heckman began the 1880 Train, but one important thing stays the same. The 1880 Train continues to embrace operating as a steam operation, allowing visitors a chance to experience the magic only a steam train can make.

Shootout Rides!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 146px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/S3QlQNMpuPI/AAAAAAAAAL4/oOSq-YK8D3U/s200/shootout3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437011610493892850" />

Keep an eye out, there are train robbers on the loose!

Several times throughout the summer, the 1880 Train transports gold from Hill City to Keystone, and darned if there aren't always bandits waiting to liberate it.

Help the sheriff protect the loot on a Shootout train ride! Gillette, Wyoming was also named after Edward, perhaps because of his help mapping a shorter, and money saving, route for the railroad.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 140px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/S2IX7TWpRVI/AAAAAAAAAKA/wQs6dlQJNFg/s200/gilletteedl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431930408137213266" />
Edward Gillette
wyomingtalesandtrails.com

The Edward Gillette car has been done in a similar style to our other Oregon Electric Railway cars, Oreville and Keystone. Reservations keep coming in as people plan to make their way to South Dakota this summer.

This year we're allowing our customers to reserve special event tickets online besides the regular train tickets. The result is that events like the Fireworks Express are already more than half sold out! Remember Mother's Day is right around the corner, it's the first event of the year.

We don't open our doors for another twelve days, but the yard is already full of activity. The gift shop staffs of both the Hill City and Keystone depot have been hard at work with their spring cleaning and merchandise is coming in.

The round house has assembled the car line-up infront of the Hill City depot. Our opening day will run four cars with engine #104 pulling the train. Maintanance is hard at work getting some last minute landscaping done and de-winterising the buildings.

The snack bar will be expanding the breakfast menue and will be offering 'Famous Meal Deals' this season. This marks the second blizzard in a little over a week. We went through a moment of déjà vu this morning. Last Monday was also in blizzard conditions. This snow storm doesn't look like it's going to be quite as big in the central part of the Hills, but we've received a couple inches so far. I'm ready for the end of South Dakota's annual Spring snow storms, but hopefully all this moisture means no forest fires in the Black Hills this summer! Regardless of my Spring fever, I couldn't resist putting a hot chocolate packet in my lunch this morning.

I snapped a few quick photos this morning. With the winter season coming to an end, the 1880 train crew is in high gear to finish all major projects. We are ambitious to start other projects in the weeks to come as well. Time goes by faster when March comes around, so updates might be more spread out. So much to do and so little time before the start of the season! Looking forward to seeing our passengers soon! Enjoy!
Joe Belczak (Staff and crew of Black Hills Central Railroad)

Engine #110

-Work continues on the final touches to the boiler side sheets. All staybolt heads are rounded over on engineer's side, and weep holes cleaned out. Mounting studs for air cylinders, pipe hangers, and power reverser are installed. Once fireman's side sheet is finished, the crew can concentrate on putting rest of furniture together on boiler, and perform annual hydro. test.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/SbU2NDi9BMI/AAAAAAAAAFg/NsNkNKkT8cw/s200/100_0288.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311210933471478978" />

Both draw bars are finished, and were installed back into their pockets. Due to a very rotted out front bumper, the crew replaced the old bumper with a sturdy metal one. The talented crew fabricated a new bumper and installed it into position using all existing holes. More stairs and rails will be added to front pilot of engine to make servicing the large compound compressors more efficient during noon servicing and start-up. An improved pin lifter has been fabricated to make uncoupling the locomotive from the cars easier.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/SbU2dbAlQzI/AAAAAAAAAFo/-f5eCTu12zQ/s200/100_0291.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311211214647673650" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/SbU2nTkkkcI/AAAAAAAAAFw/zmMp_MTfgnU/s200/100_0289.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311211384449831362" />

-All valve packing has been installed to cylinders, and now new brasses are being milled for 110's side rods. Once brasses are complete, all rods and cranks will be installed back on wheels, and locomotive will be ready for its test run.

Engine #104
-New water glasses were installed and await a final fitting. All channel timber is in place, and cross timber is presently being installed. Steel vertical posts in baggage compartment have been repaired and installed. Next items awaiting installation are rest of flooring timber supports, horizontal steel rods, truss rods, and various other pieces of hardware.

-The project of rebuilding the car's trucks is under way, and 50% of the North truck is completed. What we consider the "A" truck needed new channel iron and a rebuild of the braking components. Currently the A truck awaits new leaf springs and a new bolster pocket. Once truck is overhauled, the B truck will receive the same treatment.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/SbU289DjOPI/AAAAAAAAAGA/E7nZRNLKQMk/s200/100_0292.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311211756362873074" />

Shop Updates for February 13, 2009

I guess the word for the month down at the BHC Roundhouse the past few weeks is "BUSY!"
We were able to get a lot of tasks accomplished and new ones started. Our jobs that we accomplished are bringing us closer and closer to the start of another terrific season. Repairs on Engine #110 boiler are being completed, and soon we will be shopping engine #7 for its yearly inspection and repairs. The new car #65 will be seeing its new wood in the next weeks to come. Please visit the 1880 train website, and view any other information about our next up coming seasonal events. Also, you can enter this Blog from our official website.

Enjoy!
Joe Belczak (Shop Crew and Staff Black Hills Central Railway)

Engine #110

-All new boiler sheets are in position on fire man's side, and are currently be welded in place. Over 100 holes were drilled in side sheets to accommodate stay bolts and rivet holes along the mud ring. Holes will next be threaded for stay bolts, and rivet holes will be bored out to ensure proper rivet fit.

-Boiler side sheets on engineer's side require a few more flexible stay bolts, and flattening of all rigid staybolt heads. The next step will be to make sure all weep holes on rigid staybolts are free of any debris, and install caps on the flexible stay bolts. After a complete final inspection all parts will be reinstalled to boilers sides, and boiler will be ready for its yearly hydro test.

-All piston valves have new rings, and are installed in the newly bored valve cages. Crosshead guides were put into place last week, and all the valves await new packing. Valve gear will be ready to be connected in the weeks ahead.

Engine #104

-Though a lot of time is being spent on #110, the shop crew managed to rebuild rear pony leaf springs and repair the worn out spots in the rear suspension rigging. Last week entire rear suspension was reassembled, and concludes #104's suspension repairs.

Passenger Car Mystic

-Last week completed the final touches on Mystic's new brake system. After a successful air test, the passenger car was pulled out of the shop with a clean bill of health, and resides now in the yard awaiting the start of the 2009 summer season.

New Car #65

-Work on the new car is in full speed, and much was completed in the past weeks.

-Frame was sand blasted and repaired where necessary. Within the next week, entire frame will be finished, and wooden beams installed.

-#65's trucks were moved into roundhouse last week. In the weeks ahead, trucks will be disassembled and inspected. Much work needs to be done to trucks, but once complete trucks will be installed under frame and all brake rigging attached.

YouTube Contest Winner

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 100px; height: 100px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/SbbLpwJv7EI/AAAAAAAAAGI/ey1yZJxEMOo/s200/sgipom.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311656728690945090" />
In 2008, the Train held a YouTube contest for videos of the ride between Hill City and Keystone. It was a beautiful day for skiing, we had sunshine, warm weather, and the slopes weren't too busy. Three of the guys from the Roundhouse went, as well as the three of us from up in the office.

A few of us brushed up on the basics in a ski lesson and by noon, we were all ready for a short break in the lodge. We stayed until the mountain closed (4:00) and we're all ready to go back for some more! Please excuse the lack of photographs, but plan on seeing them in future Blogs. The Shop has been quite busy still with projects from last week, and we have added some more to the list. It is quite a major under taking to restore and preserve antique equipment, but it is well worth the labor involved. I especially look forward to the enjoyment on peoples faces when they take a trip with us! Hope to see more and more people ride the train every year with us, and share the experience with our future generations.

Joe Belczak (BHC Railroad Staff and Crew)

Engine #110
-Work continues on boiler side sheets. Engineer's sheets are in place and await their stay bolts. All stay bolt holes have been threaded, and lower rivets replaced on bottom of side sheet. I will have pictures next week, so stay tuned. Fireman's side sheets are currently being evaluated, and new sheet pieces will be added.

-Rear draw bar awaits new cushion springs, and coupler pocket rebuild is near completion.

-Valve rings are in the process of being manufactured and will be installed on valves in weeks to come.

Engine #104
-Minimal work has been completed this week on locomotive due to the large efforts being completed on 110. I will post current projects when work is completed.

BHC Car Department

-The Car Department is up in full swing with a couple major projects. With yearly car inspection done to all rolling stock, time is being focused on "Mystic" and our new car.

Mystic
-After reviewing car construction, Mystic will not receive any structural support rebuilding at this time. Car is in great shape and time needs to be spent on some of its mechanical factors first.

-Due to the age of car and its original brake rigging, the car department has decided to update the brake rigging. The new AB brake rigging will be more efficient to maintain, and provide a longer mechanical life to the car. Brake cylinder, air reservoir, and plumbing has been removed and new brake cylinder, air reservoir, manifold, valves, plumbing, and proper linkage will be installed in its place. New brake cylinder and manifold has been rebuilt and await installation. New air reservoir awaits sand blasting, hydro test, and painting.

New Car
-Our contractors have been working busily on removing all wood to the frame. So far, the frame of the car seems to be in good condition and will be able to be prepped soon. All brake parts have been cleaned and serviced by BHC crew, and await their installation under the car frame. Air reservoir passed its hydro test and awaits installation also. All main wooden support beams that span the entire car have been delivered. Crew awaits final clean-up of old wood on the car, so the iron can be inspected and worked on. BHC crew has also found new draft gears, couplers, and draw bars for the car.

Welcome to the BHC Shops

What’s Happening at the Black Hills Central Railroad Shops

Welcome to the Black Hills Central Railroad Shop Blog. This page is designed to give a weekly report to all interested parties on all projects and repairs happening at the train roundhouse. Currently the BHC is having a car restoration being performed by local private contractors. Listed below are all the pieces of equipment and tasks being performed by the talented BHC shop crew for the preparation of another busy train season here at the 1880 Train. We will be updating the progress of all our tasks weekly, so sit back and enjoy!

Joe Belczak (Shop Crew and Staff BHC Railroad)

Engine #110

-Currently all boiler side sheets will be replaced in the up and coming months. Engineer’s side sheets have been replaced and welded into place. Engineer’s side sheets are awaiting both rigid and flex stay bolt holes to be threaded.

-All cylinder cages have been rebored, and await new cylinder piston rings. Rings will be cut in the next few weeks.

-Both coupler drawbars are being inspected and repaired where extreme wear is evident. Rear drawbar is awaiting new cushion springs, and the final touches are just about done to the drawbar pockets in there build-up.

Engine #104

-Currently the BHC crew is in the process of rebuilding suspension parts that lead to rear pony truck; that includes rebuilding pony truck leaf springs and hanger parts. Front suspension assembly has been inspected and repaired where necessary.

-Both steam cylinders have been inspected, cleaned and disassembled. Fireman’s side piston awaits a new casted head, while both sides require new piston rings.

-The BHC bought new water glasses to replace the old hard-to-read ones. Currently, new water glasses have been taken apart, cleaned, and await assembly. Water glass fixtures await plumbing and mounting. This includes new lights for visibility.

Car Department

-Currently the car shop awaits new wheels and axles to replace the heavily used ones under various pieces of our equipment. They have been ordered and will be manufactured in the next month by a private company.

-All passenger cars have had their yearly inspection, and await the start of a new season. However, the open car “Mystic” will be receiving some structural repairs and its yearly inspection.

The New Car !!

-Since the project recently began, there is no name for this car yet. The new car will be quite different than are two other restored coaches, but it will resemble its original appearance as an interurban Combine Car. The car will be a great addition to the BHC car roster, because it will be able to host special groups and concessions.

-Currently our private contractors have been disassembling the very few pieces left of the original car. The contracting crew is spending meticulous time labeling and numbering all structural parts, and processing their materials order.

-The BHC shop crew has removed all brake plumbing, couplers, and wheel rigging including trucks. New truck and coupler assembly will be done in-house, and brake rigging will be done by BHC shop crew also.

Ringing In The New Year

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 100px; height: 100px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/SbbL2zBtq-I/AAAAAAAAAGQ/r5H6LQq3GkM/s200/sgipom.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311656952800848866" />
The excitement is in the air, so many new things are in the works for 2009. Keep an eye out for a new addition to the rolling stock. Another of the 1913 interurban passenger cars is in the process of being restored. To date, car number 112, Oreville, and car number 125, Keystone, have been completely restored. Car number 133, Addie Camp, has never been completely restored. We affectionately called it our 'antique car', and it is our best look into what the cars originally looked like.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/SZBvcHpL59I/AAAAAAAAAEY/4XRHbFAU36Y/s200/100_0224.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300859290293888978" />

Also, the South Dakota State Railroad Museum is being constructed south of the Hill City Depot.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/SZBvHSo03RI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/PiwYAD5-WfE/s200/100_0219.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300858932467916050" />

New projects are always in the works to maintain and improve the train yard.

Come visit us this year and take a look at all the things we've been working on!

Goodbye, 2008

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 100px; height: 100px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IgYTcwkChVk/SWPsJVKtyxI/AAAAAAAAABw/g19qBsWrLmI/s200/darkseven.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5288330032508160786" />A couple months ago, we posted about the end of our season. Passengers this weekend must have wondered if they traveled here in December rather than early October. Snow covered the ground at our Hill City Depot, giving us a preview of our Holiday Express rides.

With another great season under our belt, it was perhaps the most eventful yet. Day Out With Thomas visited us in June. Our Fireworks express was a little different with a new stop at the K - S Lodge just outside of Keystone, and Wine and Cheese options have been added for large groups to partake in. This year, Prairie Berry took over catering of the Wine Express Into The West, yet again raising the bar.

Still ahead is the Fright Train, another co-op between The 1880 Train and Prairie Berry. Finally, to cap off the year, The Train will be having holiday rides again. It's been many years since we last did these, and the crew is excited to bring them back, better than ever.
